THE ISLAND

WONDERFUL BEACHES, NATURAL ATTRACTIONS AND A RANGE OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES AND NEARBY ISLANDS TO VISIT MAKE PRASLIN AN IDEAL BASE FOR EXPLORING THE REST OF THE ARCHIPELAGO.

The second largest island of the Seychelles’ inner archipelago, Praslin is renowned for its exquisite beauty and tranquil island lifestyle. Originally coined the ‘isle of palms’ by the French explorer Lazare Picault, the island is characterised by its dense forests, white-sand beaches and surrounding waters of every conceivable tone of blue and green.

The island itself is hub to some of the best island hopping excursions to neighbouring islands like Mahe, La Digue, Cousin, Aride which are important sanctuaries, nurturing rare species of endemic flora and fauna.

Praslin is often heralded as ‘having the best beaches on the planet’.  In fact, one of its beaches, Anse Lazio, is listed as the third most beautiful beach in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

With just 5,000 residents or so, the pace of life on Praslin remains unhurried for the locals, and even less so for the visitors that call it paradise.

THINGS TO DO IN PRASLIN

Masons Travel DMC Seychelles_Authentic Seychelles

VALLÉE DE MAI

The most famous attraction on Praslin is the Vallée-de-Mai nature reserve, which over a century ago was proclaimed as the ‘original Garden of Eden’.  The nature reserve is home to the native coco-de-mer, which is also the largest nut in the world and which in ancient times, was thought to have originated from giant trees under the sea.

The nuts were so treasured that only royalty was allowed to own them and even to this day their distribution is strictly restricted.  The Vallée-De-Mai with its cascading waterfalls is also home to the native Black Parrot and the Seychelles Bulbul.

NATURE TRAILS

In addition to the Vallée de Mai, there are several other walks and trails that can be enjoyed on the island. Taking the Mont Plaisir bus up as far as it can go, will lead you to a fairly easy walk downhill along the other side of the slope, spilling right out onto Anse Lazio beach. The Glacis Noir trail, located adjacent to the Vallée de Mai, winds its way toward an amazing viewpoint over the entire island.

Fond Ferdinand is another ecologically important area on Praslin, with several different types of habitats and offering a unique chance to see freshwater river eels. Several other trails crisscross the entire island but may require quite a bit of time to complete. More information about the trails and how to organise guided tours are available at our reception.

BIG GAME FISHING & BOAT CHARTERS

With beautiful coves and bays around every corner, sailing in Seychelles is a rewarding experience. Monohulls and catamarans, with or without crews, are available for guests to enjoy a leisurely day of sailing around the islands.

A number of boat operators provide charter services for those seeking a private boating experience around the islands. Boat charters offer a great degree of flexibility, whether you’re an avid fisherman, a beginner out to learn the nuances of trolling for the big game or bottom-fishing, or simply seeking a day out on the sea roaming between islands. A list of different operators and packages are available at our reception.

DIVING

With so many surrounding islands and long stretches of relatively shallow water between them, the marine ecosystems around Praslin offer fantastic snorkelling and diving opportunities. Several operators conduct diving and snorkelling trips around Praslin and its nearby islands. Many guests take advantage of car hires or even the bus to Cote D’or to join the excursions available at the dive centres located along this beautiful stretch of beach.

NEIGHBOURING ISLANDS

Praslin is an excellent base for island-hopping tours and day-trips. A variety of unique satellite islands are in close proximity to Praslin, and excursions are available to visit most of them.

Cousine

COUSIN & COUSINE

The islands of Cousin and Cousine can be seen from the hotel. While Cousine is a private island resort, Cousin is a wildlife reserve that offers visitors the chance to see several of Seychelles endemic bird species and other flora and fauna. The island is open Mondays to Fridays and guided tours are available.

Curieuse, Cousin and St

ARIDE

Aride is a nature reserve that has been called the ‘seabird citadel’ of the Indian Ocean. Guided tours bring guests along a path toward a cliff-top view, with many endemic birds and species that can be seen. Excursions are possible between October and May but the island is closed to visitors from June to September, when beach landings are not possible for outsiders.

CURIEUSE

Curieuse lies a short distance north from Praslin, inside a nationally protected marine park. The island itself is a reserve, the only inhabitants being the marine park rangers entrusted with managing and protecting the island’s ecology. There are several areas of interest here, including a boardwalk that traverses over an ecologically important mangrove forest. Curieuse is also home to a giant tortoise conservation project, and a small museum commemorates the island’s history as a former leper colony, along with the efforts of the doctor who was stationed there.

ST PIERRE

Lying inside the boundary of the Curieuse Marine Park, the rocky outcrop of St Pierre can be seen from Cote D’or beach. This granite formation, with its handful of palms standing watch over the surrounding turquoise waters, is a favourite snorkelling and diving spot and an iconic Seychelles photo opportunity.

DINING OUT IN PRASLIN

The Creative Studio (Seychelles)

While our very own KokoSol caters to our guests with great satisfaction for breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything in between, you can also find an array of interesting food options elsewhere around the island.

During the day, takeaway establishments can offer authentic food at low prices, while several eateries in different parts of the island will offer more upscale cuisine for lunch and dinner in a traditional restaurant setting.
